Thanks man. I should probably just order another set. I know I'll need it in the future... In the mean time, I can soak the studs in Kroil.

What's so hard about disposing of acetone and ATF? Leave it open for a day and the acetone will flash off. Rest goes in the used oil tank.

Dr. Bob, you should have seen that kid when he got ahold of my beer one day, that was great.

John, did you make any progress?

Dr.B, Sean is correct... he is a monster... no question about it.

Sean, no progress yet. I soaked them all last night and all day today. I ended up rethreading four of the seven that are stuck. [thankfully i'm replacing all the lower end studs]. I broke the 10mm thread socket and ordered a new set yesterday. I need to try to 12mm [two of the seven are the larger studs] sometime this afternoon.

Use heat, it's what we do with all the main & head studs. Oxy/Ac works best, having a helper to continue the heat while you remove the stud. Has never failed us.

Ketchmi, thanks for the tip... might be my next course of action. I don't have an O/A torch handy, but I can use what I have laying around [just as long as I don't set house on fire... which is always a possibility]

I busted a girdle stud after not listening to Greg's advice about heat. Hit up Lowe's or Home Despot for a MAPP gas torch setup. Double nut the stud, then heat the crap out of the block at the base of the stud for say, 1-2 minutes, and then turn the stud out- you need to cook the factory loctite. If you can't turn the stud with one hand on a 10-12" long combination wrench, the block ain't hot enough.

I'll just add this. If you think the 928 is bad try a Ferrari (308) or NSX. Both of those still give me nightmares.

The 928 is a pleasure to work on, even though it never seems to end.

Rob, this is great advice. Now that I know I won't damage the block with serious heat, I'll heed your advice. I'm going to give it one more go after having soaked it heavily in Kroil. If not, I'll go the heat route. Thanks!

heat on the block, dry ice on the stud......

the U joints on some trucks have a poured plastic keeper holding the end caps in the drive shaft ends....... they have to be cooked out, too and the only thing short of O/A that will do it is a MAPP torch.........

heat is your friend.
