Porken chips with 55psi FPR (from '87 S4)
I just wanted to let everyone here know about this product. My car has been a test mule for the setup for a few months now and have helped others install the combo along with Adam G.
Here's the background: The S3 ('85-'86.5) cars were very conservatively tuned from the factory. These were the first 32v cars and have no knock detection/retard setup so I guess that's why. For years people have known that you can really wake up an S3 by installing a set of Autothority or clone chips. These do a few things, but basically what they do is dump a whole lot more fuel in there and let the car figure out what to do with it. You can definitely feel the car start to wake up, but it's pretty crude, especially when you consider the price of a set of chips. Enter our local inventor Porken. He's come up with a setup that, when used with a set of crossovers and a reliable, smooth running car will absolutely snap your neck back every time you step on it. Step 1: As with many other power adders or mods, you need to have a reliable, strong running car. Good plugs, wires, caps, rotors. A new set of rubber fuel lines is essential and complete top-end refresh wouldn't hurt either, including new 24lb injectors. Any time you start your car you're testing to find the weakest link. When you add power you put more stress on that weak link. Step 2: Add crossovers. Must have. (new O2 sensor would be good too) Step 3: Here's where Ken comes in. Buy a stock FPR for an '87 S4 (55psi) and a set of chips from Porken for your LH and EZ. Step 4: Disco battery, Drain the fuel system and replace the FPR (back of US passenger fuel rail, under the air filter box). Remove and replace chips for LH and EZ. Step 5: Reconnect battery, pressurize fuel pump and check for leaks, re-install everything. Step 6: Turn the key and warm it up to fully warm, test and adjust the CO with your handy dandy Blink'r. Step 8: Take the car out on the road and HOLD ON!!! Right now I'm on version 1.1 of the LH chip and 1.4 of the EZF'r chip and the changes with each version are noticeable. I have to say, the torque curve is just unbe-freakin-lievable. Everywhere from just off idle up through red line the power is there. Everywhere. I can cruise at 2k rpms and stab it in any gear and it won't lug at all. My favorite test though, is cruising at about 3500 in 3rd gear and gunning it. The latest version of the chip is amazing. From 4k to redline in no time flat, I barely had time to glance down and find that I was approaching 6k by the time I had to shift. I'm logging some AFR data and I'll post some screen shots to show how fast the car responds, it's a free-revving monster! Ken! |

Another reason to get another 928. Always wanted an '85-86 32V.
Thanks for the writeup and SOP impression.

I've done the same thing with my 85 auto, Mike's is a 5 speed. Unfreakingbelievable...I had the original Authorioty chips, they are JUNK compared to what Ken has done with his chips!!!
Best mod you can make to the 85/86. |

Has anyone smogged these? I just passed smog, so I may smog it with the chips so I have a baseline and know whether they need to be removed biennially. Is there any impact of running stock chips with the S4 FPR I mean detrimental impact, in case I needed to swap in the stock chips for smogging)? EDIT: I just checked Ken's site and it says the chips passed CA emissions. Sweet. Matt

Been meaning to do this. I'll have to see about a couple of regulators for my 5 speeds.

How about for automatics?
If so, I need two sets. |

I did a 'before' dyno over the summer with Autothority chips. I plan to get back in the next few weeks. I'll definitely post them when I do it.
We put a set in one of Adam Gs 86.5 and two others. All three of them are autos. The change has been incredible in all 3. Adam was the only one that already had Autothorities and crossovers, the other two got the chips/crossovers/new rubber FI lines and FPR all at once. |

What do you mean by crossovers, Mike?
Exhaust X pipe? If this mod is that good, and it probably is, my wife is going to get tickets. Last edited by Landseer; 11-20-2009 at 06:45 PM. |

Valet switch
You can connect the octane loop on her car...
With each update I'm favoring the '86.5 auto over the '85 manual. It has limited slip, power at any speed, and the kickdown is amazing.

I had the crossovers and AA chips (Autothority) for a long time and never had a problem being 'traction limited', now with the new setup I've got to watch myself, especially when the air is cool and the pavement and tires are too. |

This is my main "winter" undertaking.
Be aware that Ken has several chip tunes for different pressures and injector setups. Also the blinkr is a must for setting the af ratio. Visit http://www.liftbars.com lots of goodies!

The chips work fine with the stock cats/exhaust, too. I spent a lot of time testing with both an X-pipe and stock cats, on both the auto and 5-speed. "Honey Bunny, I need two 928s...for testing." (The stock fuel pressure chip works well too, with or without an X.) Hands down, the highest SPG (smiles-per-gallon) rating is with a X-over @55 psi, though! The first time you punch it with a X-pipe, FPR, and LH2²r/55 chipset, you will literally burst out laughing...just before you say "oh-sheep", and get on the brakes. |
