Erkka,
You are correct that it would be nice to be able to do that. The cost of machining goes through the roof though (I checked). The other problem is that the 968 have less teeth on the cams to allow for the variocam. |

Another great to have feature would be if chain gear(s) could be turned to different positions. This would allow intake cam adjustment in relation to exhaust cam and also gear replacement in case of problems in it. Didn't Sterling have removable gears in one previous setup?

Erkka,
I do agree with you on this, But Sterlings attempts at this showed that it was not strong enough to be a good idea. That and the extra cost was not worth spending much time trying to reinvent the wheel so to speak. However at this time, we have had a private party step up to the plate, and taken the 10 sets that were previously spoken for! So the cams are a GO! I will leave the buy in for anyone who wishes a set still open until Feb 1st. So if anyone else is interested in a set at the current price ($1600). Please contact me immediately. However the casting process will commence shortly! to all those who have participated and been patient with the minor delay. |

Hi Colin...............I'm new to this party and have some basic questions:
are the cams plug and play? do we need new lifters? what benefit is anticipated over stock S4 config? cheers..............Malcolm

Hey Malcolm,
Yes and no to your first question. I would recommend stiffer valve springs with higher duration cams. This can be done with the heads left on the car. I would also recommend replacing the lifters with the light weight VW lifters. But technically if yours are in good condition then they will not have a problem. As to the benifit, that all depends on the cam grind. A GT+ grind will give a nice boost over stock power, while not killing much torque. Where as a wild grind like a .460" lift and 233 duration will result in a much greater top end power with a drop in bottom end power. ![]() |

Just thinking out loud here.. since the chain gears can't be made to be adjustable,
would there be any benefit in making a change to the Advance/Retard orientation of the gear before it is machined into it's permanent setting. I don't know what Sterling learned while he was making his adjustments, maybe he could chime in as to whether or not a small increase in advance or retard shows any gains. Rather than using the exact factory timing, maybe this could be a place we could pickup a little extra performance ? |

90 S-4
I have considered the intake timing by adjusting the gears on the chain. The timing selected will not hurt the upper power, and will raise the peak TQ number to a slightly higher range than a set of cams with less lobe seperation angle (LSA). However running with the LSA of the S3 cams this will be good for all cars. The reason is that in wilder cam grinds the idle will be smoother as there will be less overlap. This will also help drivability. For cars running boost, esp SC cars these will be the cams to have as one can run wilder cams and cram more charge into the cylinders, with less overlap. Running a shorter LSA with slightly more overlap can give slightly more mid-range power, but I had to make the call, and when it comes into trying to customise the cams, and changing the offset of the gears etc. This can lead to problems very quickly. And for most people this will be the best LSA. |

Well. Most important thing is that group order moves forward. It just would have been nice to have everything imaginable included except maybe latest on the fly cam profile adjustments like new Porsche engines use. Hopefully these cams are at least as good as best factory sets.

Colin,
Any more info available yet about grinds and/or computer simulated results? Thanks, Hans |
