Those are great cars and can be had so inexpensively now. A friend of mine picked up one for his son. CHEAP. Been thinking about getting one for a beater.

It's going to be my daily driver. Biggest factor was how dog-friendly it was. Removed the bottom of the back seats, folded the tops down, ready to go.
It's also been a while since I've owned a turbo. Gobs of power for such a small vehicle. Would give my (old) Geozuki a run for the money. True pocket rocket. And you can't beat 180HP out of 1.8L stock.

That was my impression too, pretty dang quick and if you are in to modding it, lost of extra power to be had there. The first time I encountered one I had no idea they were turbo-ing them. Suprised me.
And I agree on being dog friendly, need something like that too.

I"m the guy that bought one for his son. We have the same exact model. Mine is an auto. Good points are safety and visibility. Bad points are interior finish, coil on plug recall, seat airbag wiring recall, and the turbo seals are good for about 100k miles. Changing the TB and WP is an adventure.
My son loves it and he turned down a 928 in favor of this. It also hauls a bunch of musical equipment when set up in wagon mode.

Nice car, Don! I've always liked the GTIs, mostly because it seems like an actual "premium" small car, which is hard to find.

I've got to do the TB any time now, it's got 134k and the belt was last done at 80k. I bought it from an independent small-lot dealer but I found the PO's insurance card in the glove box and gave him a call. Dealer serviced it's whole life. Also has a new cat and a/c compressor. I had the local VW gurus give it a PPI and they said it was a puppy and just replaced a couple of relays that threw the codes in the OBDII history. All cylinders were +/- 2% - 198/199/200/199.
I've been told to carry spare coil packs. For modding, the bottom end is good to 300HP; intake is good as is, going to 3" exhaust would be the first bump to make it ready for a chip. Stock i/c is fine for minor use but getting a larger one would give you lots of cool and stay on top of the temps. Then chip it, bigger injectors, larger turbo, etc. and you're at 300. But my car budget is for the Porsche.

Mine is gonna need a MAF soon. They are also kind of a weak spot, but we know about that from the 928. I looked at the IC and decided that the plate in front of it was kind of a performance brake on the car. I was gonna put some louvers in it so the air would flow past better. There are a couple of chip vendors, but we're gonna keep ours stock. I figure when I do the turbo bearings I'll do the MAF at the same time.

My wife purchase hers in 02. 108K now and running strong. Things I replaced were Coils, and recently the T-Belt/waterpump, Cat, MAF, Valve cover gasket, CPS which was starting to act up. Otherwise 8 years no problems.
