I figured you'd already eliminated tires, but stranger things have happened.

You going to the fest?

I sure hope so! Just waiting for a shakedown run at the track this weekend before I book.

Cool. Shake those wheel bearings down (out) before you get to the track! I think I'm going to do a tent thing on Thurs and Fri night. I kicked around the idea of bringing the 951 in my hauler, with cots, fridge, etc. The thought of getting caught unloading a street car isn't worth it!

I think I'll camp, too. I'm going to have to finally find my own tent, though!

I just got a call from Markus, who says that the bearing in question crumbled when he pulled it out. Good call, everyone.

He also tells me that the axles I used had a VW-style cardboard gasket in them which compresses as the bolts tighten, which must be why tightening seemed to take me so long (specifically, so many turns at tight-but-still-less-than-spec torque).

He's working on finding a bearing to rebuild steering shafts: does anyone know of a source? Apparently, it's a bit of an oddball, but only the lower one tends to go.

It was my Left rear that was making a noise... new ones are NICE and quiet..

They either have in stock, or can get just about any bearing needed for anything.. If he can get an old one out, measure it, they should be able to match up a replacement!

Have you repacked your CV's recently?

I would go ahead and do that, so you can get your car super smooth.

My noise was a completely dry CV.

Thanks, Charlie. Now I figure I'll do the rear bearings on mine....but I'll wait till after fest.

Maybe the tent thing is a bad idea...

I hear the bugs are a little intense down there, but I'm sinking so much into car stuff lately that I think I should camp!

One of mine was dry, but that noise was overpowered by this one. Also, I changed both axles a couple of weeks ago for new ones.

Thanks for the link. When he gets a shaft apart, I'll have him measure the bearing.

This bearing was shot. He said it didn't put up much of a fight:

Also, as everyone indicated, with everything spinning the way it should, the car is much smoother and quieter!

I'm packing up a little early for a track weekend, and if the car holds up the way it should, I'll book my spot at 944Fest early next week.

Also, a thought I had about steering shafts: are both ends the same? If so, assuming that it's normally the lower bearing that goes, could you at least salvage a good bearing from another shaft to make one good shaft out of two?

You guys have me worried about my rear bearings now too. PO said he changed them, which is what is *REALLY* making me worry considering how bad everything else he touched was.

John - I know you have the puller/installer, but what are you using for a torque wrench?
