CP, I know I have told you what I am putting together... why not just ask someone who is already involved in putting this together RIGHT NOW?

I have parts lists, most of the parts on order or on hand, and an engine being re-assembled as this is being typed.... stand alone is already on hand, exhaust is going to be.... "interesting"... crossover and headders are arriving at the shop for modification / upgrade TODAY...

noob...

FWIW, if you can wait until I get mine back together, you can take it for a test flight and see if you like it...

Vic, those pics are actually Dave's when he was test fitting the turbo up with his modded V band crossover for my RHD car. As you can see that's one benefit of RHD, no S-Bend needed.

What turbo are you using John? Or is that a secret for now?

Full boost? Don't have logs but I'd say in the 3500-3800 range. 1 bar in the low 3's.

Thing is you can hear it spooling well before full boost / torque. It's working away nicely all the time.
You can clearly hear it in this link...even above the exhaust and sirens....lol...

Looking like this may be the winner...Every review I read had it eating a 3076 for lunch.

Or maybe I should say, it is producing the same results at 600rpm lower, with more range up high.

Gotta say, that sounds too good to be true on face value, but more power to you if it's the 'one'. (complete with pun).

Just as a matter of interest. George D had a larger version on the first incarnation of his 3L motor. Suffice to say, he's now installed a different turbo. Didn't work out like it was advertised so perhaps check with him just for the sake of it. Admittedly, his was pretty big from memory. May have been too big even for a 3L...but it would be interesting to get the feed back of that turbo vs say a GT35 just for comparisons. If all the reviews come back with that one over the GT35 it just might make you consider all options.

Not exactly the same as a 2.5L 8v, but a 2.2L 16v I5. Gives a good representation of all the turbos and spool characteristics. Should translate pretty well to a 944.

Quote:
The goal: Compare the new billet wheels on the HTA turbos to there traditional counterparts. There is a lot of speculation out there, lots of data on Evo's, but nothing for a 20vt I5. We don't have heads that flow massive amounts of air, nor do we have variable valve timing.

The test: Audi I5 20v 2.3L, 91 octane, same basic tune for all turbos, same boost @ ~30 psi peak, same car, same day, you get the picture :P We did not go for max power because that is not my goal, I want the most responsive turbo, that makes the best power. You know, just like all of us. 8)

The turbos: All had .82 A/R hot sides

The billet wheels basically perform as advertised. The HTA 35r is impressive and very close to the 30r in spool. With a little extra octane, both of the billet turbos would be a real kick in the ass.

So which one am I going with? I am going to put the 35r back in the car and play with some meth/water injection and see what happens. I have a feeling I will end up going with one of the 30r size turbos though. Now that I know how these behave on my car, I can make some better comparisons to the other plots people have out there.

Her is what we have. The PTE5857 and PTE35R were run on the same day, same tune. All of the other turbo's were from the same session at the beginning of this post, and the tune has improved since then with more timing up top. Though it is interesting, the PTE35R spooled well, but put down pretty unimpressive numbers. I don't recall it being extra rich or anything, so who knows what was happening. Maybe it needs more boost to shine. I had to call it a night and get to Monterey before the sun came up.

PTE5857-BB, HTA3076R, HTA3582R. Hank, you will like this one.

So my thoughts after all of this? I still like the PTE5857. After looking through this thread and thinking back to the 30R, I think it was putting down 450whp before it died. Could I have taken it to 500 whp? Probably not. I think the 5857 will get there. The HTA30R might just get there, and that would be a kick in the pants since it spools so quickly. I like the 5857 because it is so drivable, I still fear the surge on the 35R's, but in their defense Hank hasn't had an issue, and we didn't see any on the dyno with the billet wheels.
