Default Dropping a 993 engine...

My workshop project is in progress, and in the next few weeks I will be operational (I hope. Contractors...doh!).

So I would like to hear from you folks how long it generally takes YOU to drop an engine. Obviously not the first effort, but generally, utilizing a two poster and a scissor for the engine (or similar).

Thanks,

Peter R.

Not too long. 2-3 hours if working fast.....1/2 day at the most, consuming ice cold beverages, answering emails, answering phone calls, visiting...etc

we seem to do, on average, two drops a month. 4-5 hours and its out. There is some cleaning and organizing time in there as well.

Of course cell phone call and text messages delay us a bit sometimes

I dropped my motor with an ATV jack and floor jacks. Took me most of the day since I had to remove bumper. Since you dont have to, Id say 1/2 a day taking your time.

Nope, haven't dropped it yet...ran into some serious delays building the new workshop.

And now the company is talking about sending me to Egypt for a year and a half. Ganz Toll!

I have been toying around with dropping mine in the fall to address what was a tapping lifter. Oddly, it seems to have gone away in the past week or so.

That said, I'd love to drop it, clean her up real well, do the usual "while you're there things" and learn some stuff over the winter. Added benefit, I'd HAVE to buy a lift (wink, wink).

'6th of October City' it's called, or so they tell me.

'Another 18 months of neglecting the 993' sounds more like it.

Default The importance of cooling - Transaxle

So I thought as I am still pretty new to this forum, I would address something that we have been seeing with Porsche Transaxles, and ask if it makes sense to all of you.

Many people have modified their Porsche cars with chips, and exhaust systems, lightened flywheels, and stronger clutches. Some have regeared to take better advantage of these modifications, but how many people here have thought about their gearbox temps? How many people have ever checked to see where they are when it comes to the gearbox temp?

The 993 gearbox can be a bit sensitive when it comes to heat, as it uses a three piece 1st and 2nd gear synchronizer setup. This setup while offering a very nice and smooth shift under normal driving, can become damaged under hard driving. This is not only due to heat, but heat can certainly play a factor with all Porsche gearboxes.

So the simply solution here is to simply install a transaxle cooler. This is not a difficult solution, and can be done by the DIY. The only reason that I bring it up here is this is something that seems to get overlooked in the normal modifications made to Porsche cars.

I would be happy to help anyone with this, as well. We do these quite often for the racing crowd, so we have quite a bit of experience with this.

Happy to help, any way I can. Feel free to ask me any questions about this or anything else gearbox related.

Awww - Erik and GBox are wonderful folks - so my guess is that Erik posted in an existing thread rather than starting a new thread...

For that - please know Erik is one of the few who contacted me before he posted anything to be sure it was OK.. Gbox - for that - is a "class act" and frankly - is a wonderful vendor (ask me how I know )...

Anyway - Erik - welcome!! Heading over to your new thread in a minute..

John
