your 993, did you know? (trivia? useful info thread)
Lots of info elsewhere, but lets build to the database here.
1. the immobilizer on 96 - 98 models................ grrrrrrrrrrrr. for nearly 18 months of ownership I cycled the door locks closed / open every time i needed to start the car just to satisfy the immobilizer circuitry. Then i learned that i could just insert the key, turn it ~ 1/2 way until the immobilizer icon alights in the clock face, press the immobilizer button, the icon is extinguished and the car will start once the key is turned. No more cycling the locks every time to start my car. Joy! Craig |

I'm not sure of the exact number, but the body is actually offset on the chassis to the passenger side by about 5mm I believe. Check the gap between the wheels and the fenders and you will see this. Tire rub is almost always first noticed on the passenger side.
Another cool thing I figured out while redoing my interior: If you remove the upper dash, the sheetmetal dash frame is the same stamping from 30+ years ago when 911's used to have that huge center speaker in the middle of the dash. There is still a hole in the stamping to install a speaker.

Early '95 US 993's with Option Code 718 are really '94 models shipped to the US without SAI.

My '97 C4S has episodic issues with the immobilizer. On a purely random basis it will come on while I'm driving. No apparent rhyme or reason. Nothing seems to happen and when next stop I turn off the engine and push the door unlock button on the key fob and the problem goes away. At least until the next time. Weird.
BTW great to see several new faces here. Welcome. If you need an invite to OT let me know.

Look at the dates of the last posts on the opening page...There's just not a lot of traffic here...Which results in not very much information here...Which results in not a lot of traffic here...Which results in....Well, you get the picture...Truth is, even though Rennlist is oftentimes a royal PITA, it's a tough habit to break.

I'm here but just not a wealth of info on my 993.Thats why I'm here, and there.
Its more fun to drive the 993 with the radio OFF. Why do they even put one in? Motor Music! |

A few little factoids I've learned during this winter's projects:
1. Early 95 993's had a "loose" 2nd gear from the mainshaft so it can be replaced without a new shaft (1st is still part of the mainshaft). Later versions 1st and 2nd are part of the mainshaft. 2. Some LSDs on cars out there (my C4S is one) have can be retrofitted with more plates allowing you to have the same number as the Porsche Motorsports / Guards units (4 total) And one I love to used: 3. Removing the intermittent wiper relay allows you to park the wipers on the other side of the windshield freeing your view of them. Related... rotating the little wiper arm 180 degrees so you don't have to take out the wiper relay to do the same thing is a giant pain in the a$$

In the areas that are not so smart to live in (namely the north where it snows and the temperatures can be in the single digits or negative--why do I live here???), the front boot makes a great hiding place for Christmas gifts that you don't want to be found.

Now I am just confused about good old #718, are you sure your car didn't have SAI installed when it entered the US? BTW a PCNA COA is a joke, waste of $100 and no info about anything. |

RSR91128, my abject apologies for the mis-information! After reading your query, rather than trust Streather's statement on p.19, where he implies that the early '95 U.S. cars had '94 engines w/o SAI, I took the trouble to take a telescoping mirror and light to inspect my '95 with Option 718 and found, much to my dismay, the dreaded plumbing and check valve. Woe is me! At least we're OBDI. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I guess I have something to add. It is probably common knowledge to most people but I didn't know until last weekend.
All left side specific parts end in an odd number in the 9th digit, all right side specific parts end in an even number. This is true for all parts that have a right and left designation. Example front control arm: 993 341 017 00 LEFT 993 341 018 01 RIGHT This makes it easier to figure out right or left side before you climb under the car if you just pile up suspension pieces or exhaust without marking them. |

I didn't know that and I've been buying Porshe parts for more then a few years. Interesting trivia.
