Default Wielding a Clay Bar - Detailing Fun!

Here's an account of a detailing job that I did earlier in the year.

The nice weather convinced me to finally try the Mcguires clay bar kit that I've had sitting under my bench for the last year.

... the car was washed, clay barred while wet, hand dried, one coat of Mother's Glaze/sealer applied by hand and removed by a random orbital buffer. The wax coat was Mother's Carnuba wax - applied by hand, removed, buffed, and polished using the buffer. I then finished with a hand buff with a microfiber cloth. Stainless was polished using Mother's Billet metal polish.

I'm really impressed with the results. The car is in pretty good shape anyway, as I'm a freak for keeping the paintwork in good shape, but I'm really impressed with the results. The clay bar treatment really did a nice job of taking off the surface haze and the glaze coat really helped take out the minor swirls.

Total time, start to finish, approx 5 hours.

It's worth it just to see the mirror finish on the doors.

Now if only it wasn't so damned cold when I started this morning... ice was forming on the paintwork while I was doing the clay bar treatment - it was brutal. I kept having to come inside to warm up my hands and the clay.

Wayne, car looks awesome. I'm gonna clay my car before winter storage. I have a Griot's bar which I've had for some time, then will put a coat of either Zaino or Rejex on it. I put Reject on my Audi wheels - even easier to use than Zaino - and I hear it is pretty durable. What did you use on your wheels??

Actually, I havedn't used anything special on the wheels yet, but will probably use rejex on my next detailing job, as it's easy to use.

Thanks!

I'm dying to do it again before I put the car away for the winter, but I know that it will just need doing again by the spring, so I'll defer the job until March and do a really good job once slush season has passed.

well, I try to drive the car as often as the weather allows during the winter... as long as the roads are dry and salt free, then I like to get the car out... I just have to be careful to let the tires warm up before I have fun.

I wouldn't know, it gets down to about the 40's here in South Tejas. That's about it.

Kind of like my approach to winter driving!

Yeah, your winter driving consists of driving to the dealer when your battery becomes sulfated and you need a nw one.

Thanks. It was a lot of work - the kind of job I really only want to do once a year.

I love a well polished car! Brings back fond memories

I can't even count how many hours it took to get everything perfect on mine earlier this year (first time polishing and claying and all that myself)

When I brought my car in to do the cats last week I explicitly told the service manager to make sure no one washed the car. Of course, someone did, and now my perfect swirl free finish is all scratched up again. I've decided to drive it this winter (I'm probably going to drive it south for the winter though), so I won't detail it again now. Just means more work this spring!

Phil, you should check out that clay bar to make sure it hasn't sulfated from lack of use!
