I know I've beaten this horse to death, but the combustion leak detector kits are cheap, and if you own a 951, worth keeping handy. Compression and leakdown are poor tests to diagnose a HG problem, especially at shop rates.

I agree, which would probably be why I dont pay the shop rates for a series of tests I can perform myself.. yes I own both test rgs, and the leak detector kits.. the tests are more adapt at mechanical failures, whereas the test kit will aid in diagnosing a head gasket going bad... |

I honestly have never looked into those kits. I didn't realize they were so affordable and easy to use. I always thought the test involved checking the gasses in the system, not the liquid. I'm going to try to pick one up after work. I didn't see any on harbor freight's website, but I guess I'll check if they have them at the harbor freight by my office. |

I'm shopping for a crimp tool for AMP connectors. What is the best tool and who's got the best price. I'm looking at this one right now.

The one I have is $45 for the handle and $25 - $110 each die.. $380 gets a case, handle, and 7 dies I am going to buy the case, and individual dies as I find a use for them! |

Weatherpak crimp dies with ratcheting handles. I'm not 100% sure they're weatherpak though, but they are two-step. Handles are Paladin.

AMP die, weatherpack correct die is ~$88.... the correct weatherpack die is actually 3 steps IIRC...
Not sure if I am going to buy it or not.. as I dont believe I am using any weatherpack connectors on my car.. but I might just pick it up anyway! and yes, ratcheting handle, individual die inserts.. |

I'll have to try to find mine. It's two-step; there's a separate round hole for the seal crimp. So to use it on a Weatherpak, it takes two separate actions to do a full 3-step crimp.

Either way really works fine.. the correct dies just make it easier, quicker, and less failure prone.. but then if you have done it enough times, failure isn't a real problem.. |

I priced out a Paladin ratcheting handle and an AMP crimping die at $75 on amazon. During lunch, I went out and picked this up at harbor freight. The die appears to be the correct one, so if the handle turns out to be a POS, I can still use the dies in a nicer handle. Also, at $12 it is more practical considering I only have to crimp connectors for the MAF harness and whatever I decide to use connectors for when wiring up the SMT-6, LC-1, and ballast resistors. For the MAF harness, I believe I am just going to replace the entire thing from the DME to the MAF.
On a side note, I am officially addicted to HPDE. I did Infineon last month and Thunder Hill this past weekend in my daily driver, a stock Acura RSX-S with fresh all-season rubber. I put some fast and expensive cars to shame, all while maintaining some decent mpgs. Pictures here |
