Default Torsion bar carrier replacement

I need a new one. The original thread is here. I got the tube out and the swingarm mounting brackets are bent on the passenger side. Pictures here. Probably happened when I backed the car into the armco on my last ricochet at the Glen. Sigh.

So anybody got one?

Never mind. Got one cheap from Randy at Whaletail, about 10 minutes from my house. Sheesh. I got a spare swingarm for the side that bent the torsion tube bracket, but mine are SO pristine, I'd like to figure a way to compare the two in case my old one isn't really bent.

He must be different face to face, or perhaps the hassle of shipping or dealing with me is what has been inflating his prices...

Nice progress, by the way!

I'm sure dealing face to face is better in general. Randy first gave me a swingarm that was pretty corroded. Took me a while to figure out it must be from winter driving. He swapped for a better looking one. Nice to be able to just drive back and chat. The two swing arms were manufactured late 85 and came from different manufacturers and have different casting seams. Go figure.

I keep vacillating between powder coating the torsion tube (and a couple other pieces to keep the unit price down) and just cleaning off the 30 year old cosmoline and sticking it on the car...

This is on my to do list. Did they fit well? I like the look of these better than some Delrin bushings. But they are kinda pricey in comparison. I actually have a nice freshly plated set of spring plates on the shelf.

The inner race IDs are purposely machined oversize because (they claim) variations in the spring plate ODs. Feh.
An early set of instructions said use shim stock, a later set said metal filled epoxy. I bought 0.002" shim stock. Takes more patience to cut and fit several layers, but you get a semi-press fit that won't change over time. You can sorta see it peeking out in the pictures. The outer races are urethanes and are press fit, although I haven't done the torsion tube races yet.

Pricey, yes. If I was starting over, I would consider getting big SS sphericals and machining a set of adapters. The outer races might also require casting a urethane adapter, but it'd probably still be cheaper.

doug

Update pics. I love a clean part. I also mounted one outer race in the torsion tube and managed to get the grease hole in the right place and threaded...

More pics, here. Got the spring plates mounted up with no torsion bars for a test fit on the car. Don't forget the 2 mm washers between the torsion tube and the spring plate covers. Binds without 'em, no play and smooth motion with 'em. Funny how that works. The goal is to test fit the 335/30 tire and check the fender clearance.

doug

Doug, those look too nice to use!

This is a little off-topic, but if you have any photos of your car with the rear quarters cut off, could I persuade you to email them to me? I'm specifically interested in the seams where the fenders meet the centre panel.

This is what I got. I never saw it cut up. I probably would've fainted.

Those look like impressive work. I'm going to bite the bullet this winter and cut my quarters off in favour of much better ones from a parts car. I'm determined to do it myself, but I'm not much of a welder, so it could be entertaining!
