Default Old Time TSD & Scavenger Hunt Rallies

I'm glad John D. had the word "Gimmick" in the Forum title and spinning off JBerk's thread -

Whatever happened to the fun, 'gimmicky', TSD or Scavenger Hunt rallies that were informal and geared towards non-competition? I remember running a couple in my teens and had a lot of fun. Talking with some non-gear head friends they thought something like that would be fun and would also cross over for gear heads.

What killed them? Loss of interest, lawsuits, law enforcement interference? I haven't heard of one for a long time. Anyone else?

I did a rally with one of the Pennsylvania PCA regions (in a friend's '61 Roadster!) that was a gimmick-type rally. We had a blast! That was about 3 years ago.

Share some details? I'd like to organize one.

I really can't remember anything about how it was done, the last one I was one was probably forty years ago. Just lots of fun and gathering up strange objects.

Hiya Guys, I really enjoy a good gimmally. I put together a MoFo for 944fest, I'm extremely proud of the challenge I put out. The troops had to visit 4 or 5 small towns near our event, and solve puzzles at parks, or go thru Wendy's and order a whopper, or go to an auto parts store and get a rad cap for a early beetle, etc etc.. Those activities would reward with a poker card. Another fun one I did was I made a gift registry at Walmart for a fake "porsche" wedding. Guests had to go shop for an item on the list (cheap car stuff) and bring it back for the prize give-aways. I'd expect the reason for the demise of the gimmally is the amount of WORK it takes to set it up right! You need to scout, meet with managers or property owners along the route, etc. I bought a gimmally packet off the internet, and it was kind of a joke. What I set up was 5x better. If someone was tasked with doing one and had no experience, I'd be willing to talk with them and share ideas.
