Windshield Washer Fittings
Noticed under my hood while doing an oil change, that where the windshield washer hoses go through the hood, that the plastic plug that holds the fittings was not secure in the bottom of the hood. Upon closer inspection, one of the plastic hose fittings, (in the shape of a "Z") that goes through the plastic plug was broken off in the middle. There are actually two the these plastic fittings going through the hood plug. No wonder my windshield washer wasn't working! Not sure what the second fitting and hose are for, could be the intensive wash??
Went to the local auto parts to see if they had some type of plastic fitting that might work, perhaps a vacuum fitting. No luck, every type of fitting but nothing in the shape of a "Z". Decided to fabricate a replacement out of brass. Found some suitable parts in my pipe fitting junk drawer. Had to cut the ends off two right angle fittings, and cut a straight hose barb fitting in half. Did some drilling in the ends of the right angle fittings and pressed in the hose barb cut off's. Decided to silver solder the barbs to the fittings to be sure they would never leak of come apart. Don't think this brass part will ever fail. |

Windshield Washer Fittings
Here is where the broken part went through the hood. Put a plastic tie on the hose in the hood, so it would not get lost.

Windshield Washer Fitting Installation
The easiest way to install the new fittings would have been to remove the second plastic fittings and hoses. However; knowing that one of the plastic fittings had already broken, and the hoses had been attached for so many years, in a very tight space, the chances of breaking the second fitting during disassembly was very high. I decided not to mess with the second fitting, and elongated the mounting hole for the new fitting, and shortened the length of the barb on the upper half of the new fitting so I would clear the second fitting while I was screwing the two parts together.
Worked OK, now it is completed. As usual, "If there is a hard way", I find it. |

Workin' on it

Nice work. I suspect a lot of people have those broken. I do. I need to fix the pump and make the reservoir stop leaking, too. Always, always something.
