I was originally looking at the air-cooled cars because I knew I wanted a 911, but not which one. At some point I realized that you could get a 996 for fewer dollars than a 993, so I figured it was a no-brainer and don't regret my decision for a second.

that makes 2 of us now. i wanted something me little more up to date than 1970's look andVW technology. I wanted a real porsche.. Not a VW spin off. Thus why i had a 928 for years... Until they finally came out with thier OWN 911

is newer better
jake you know the old addage, buy the newest you can afford, i love my 996, but i didn't do my homework before i bought it, now they tell me the 997 is the better model of the two, i don't drive mine everyday, i don't drive it in the rain, but i drive it quite a bit, i have a trophy shop & the h2 doesn't get good enough gas mileage to drive all the time, but it will fit more trophies than the porsche, i looked at some older models like the 993 but i couldn't see paying more for a car that didn't have the colder air, nicer interior, better ride, not quite as much hp, i guess i wanted something that i thought i could take a long trip in & it would be more dependable & more modern technology i guess is the word i'm looking for, i guess i wanted the newer options, but i do like the widebodies look alot better, i didn't really like the look of the plain old 996, i had to put the rims & wing on it, to me it doesn't look like a sports car if you don't mod it, imho, now i've been lookin at some vipers, don't know much about them either, but i just like nice cars, doesn't have to be any certain model or make, i've definitely learned a lil' bit being on the porsche forums. thx

for the money
jake, thats pretty much what happened to me, both were side by side & the 996 had less miles & more modern & a lil' less money so why not get it, i thought it was a real 911, but i hate when someone thinks thats all you could afford so you got a 996, the total amount didn't really matter, i just thought for the price of the two i thought it was a better deal, i'm going for the 60,000 mile tune up tomorrow, do i need to get everything done, or is there certain things that are a must, like plugs, coils, fluids etc... thx, hey you said you like to answer questions!

The fastest race cars and the fastest street cars Porsche has ever produced have one thing in common, they are all water-cooled. Some moldy figs may not like to hear that fact but it's true.
Porsche has a great history of air cooled cars, but it is just that "a history". Like it or not air cooling is a part of Porsche's past that will probably never return. I like many of the older air-cooled Porsche's but I also like the new cars. I never could understand those enthusiasts who could never see past the air-cooled cars. Different strokes I guess.

As early as 1976 Porsche was evolving towards superior water cooling in the race cars.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_935 "After the second race, the CSI rule makers insisted that the whale tail hood of the road-going 930 must fit on the race car. The air-to-air intercooler setup under the rear hood had to be altered to a more compact air-to-water layout, which cost Porsche several weeks of testing and half a Million Deutsche Mark.[6]" |

Machbx is Awesome Sauce w/bitch sprinkles and a 996. And your air-cooled is really oil-cooled. But yes, maybe that whole business w watercooling combustion engines is just a fad that won't take root in the automotive industry. That's crazee talk |
