More stripping. A little more and it will be lifted up into the engine stand. Want to strip it down enough that two maybe three people can lift it up. Don't want to use and engine hoist.

Some progress in the last few weeks. Engine is stripped down to the hads. Oil pump and oil cooler are off too and sitting on the engine stand. Next couple of weeks I'll start pulling the heads.

That bolt is definitely a "triple square"
This is a great part 2 thread. As a guy doing my own tear down and repair I'm in for the read. |

No update yet. The snowmobile season has started and it sidetracked this project for a bit. But I want to restart it in a couple weeks. Really want to see what shape the crankshaft is in.

Imre, when you put it back together, will you bypass the oil "cooler" that exchanges heat with the coolant? A lot of the Spec 996 builds seem to do that, and it simplifies a lot of things.

Having said that, I've restarted the project. Got my hands on an 8ft table. This will be the surgical table for the engine for the next year. Last edited by Imo000; 03-18-2015 at 06:49 PM. |

What is clean?
Pulled the heads today. Bank 2, passanger side, exhaust camshaft cap came off and under it the journal is really worn. All the other cam journals are fine on both heads. Cylinder #2 has a single line in it. I think this was here when I took the engine apart 2.5 years ago. All the other cylinders bores are smooth. Next will be the sump pan as one of the 6mm bolts that hols the head on at the chain fell into the engine. |

Pulled everything except a few case half bolts from the engine. Gutteted the sump too. Next is to rearange the engine stand mounts so I can split the case.

It will be cleaned again, as soon as the weather gets a little warmer. Moved the engine from the stand to the table. The only think stopping me from splitting the case is the crankshaft pulley. The TDC locating hole in the block is interfering with the pulley and the block won't split more than a few mm. I have a theory what the problem is with the engine but want to wait until the block is split to confirm it.

Got crank pulley off. I think the easiest and safest way is what I did. The bolts at the flywheel side are leftovers from 3.5L Nissan project that I had a few years ago. Got lost of suggestions on Rennlist when I asked for help with the pulley removal and this is the simplest vereion I could come up with. After the pulley came off, tried to split the case but it won't go more than a few mm. I'm going to have a good look again, maybe I missed a bolt.

The case is split. The two long T-50 head bolts was left out, that's why the case didn't want to come apart. Once removed the case slowly slid apart. The connecting rod journals look ok. No sign of overhathing from a spun bearing but I found a creves with large copper looking shavings. Tomorrow I'll start digging a little further.

It's all apart. Problem found. One of the main bearings was just about ready to slin. Also one of the connecting rod bearings were one their way to spin but hasn't yet. I think this is as close as you can get to a total disaster. The crankshaft journals look good. The one that jad the really bad bearing has some copper deposites on one half (probably when the engine was sbut down after the drag strip run). I think it will polish out. I will take the crankshaft to an automotive machine shop for an assesment. But I thinknit will be ok with only a micro polish.

Brpught the crankshaft back from the machine shop. It speced out fine when I took it in. All the journals were micro polished. The copper deposit from the main journal came off nicely. Next is to start ordering the new bearings (mains and con rods) and all the other hardware/parts needed for re-assembly.
