Wheel stud removal
I want to try more spacers on the front wheels, and I find that while the rear studs are plenty long, the fronts, not so much. The stockers were all swapped out in 1991, and a few recently got reused on the winter car (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...hmentid=445291).
The question is, is there a simple way to pull and reinsert the wheel studs wile the hubs are still on the car? I'm think lug nuts and pullers (I have a few). I've had the suspension pulled to bits so many times, I'd just as soon not do it again... You can likely get creative with a deep socket and a large C clamp.

Alas, The C-clamp was cheap and looked about to strip, so I gave up and pulled the hub. My bench vise was enough to press the stud out, then press in the new studs enough so that a stack of washers and a lug nut allowed me to pull it all the way in.
I got 72 mm studs and ~8mm spacer from Randy Meyer at Whaletail, just up the road from me. Even so, the front fender looks like it over hangs at the top of the wheel too much. I could probably go wider... Update: I went big:
http://pcaucr.org/media/image-galler...ll&gallery=224 These are 42 mm spacers w/ 100mm studs. The spacers were unfinished and cheap off ebay. I could tell they weren't clearanced on the back and would need to be machined, but that much I could do without hurting myself. Some driving around with the 285/30s and 11x18 and no rubbing up front: http://pcaucr.org/media/image-galler...ll&gallery=224 Regards, doug 86 951 (http://pcaucr.org/media/image-galler...ll&gallery=224) 01 E320 (W210) 4matic Wagon (http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...body-do-2.html) 00 540i-6 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...hp?albumid=976) 94 855 turbo Wagon (sold in 09) 85 535i-5 (sold in 07) 76 300D (sold in 92) 83 944 (sold in 86) I apparently only buy cars designated by numbers |
