Cool Detour on my 3 liter project

Well,

While I'm waiting for new pistons from Mahle for my 3 liter project. I started looking at my 951 and said it needs some work. Paint and body work.

So off came the mirrors (968 mirrors painted satin black metallic) , the rubber seals and the lights, the hatch with 968 spoiler (from CPR also painted satin black metallic).

The 951 is now at El Gallo Paint and Body. A friend had his mid '80s 911 convertible painted there and it looks good. Not great but really good. Here is the topper, the 911 convertible was only $2,000. Mine with some body work will be $2,200. I am going with a slight color change. Grand Prix White will replace Alpine White.

I'm sure it won't look as good as my wife's '86 944, but at 1/4 the price, who cares?

Maybe I'll put some Martini stripes on it....

Allegedly next month everything I need for my engine build will be here.... we'll see: I have thought that before.

On the plus side my '72 911 is all but complete. Maybe next week will be time for a trip to the dyno..

Go Satin black...

Are you keeping the rear wing?

and why the change?

$2200 is really cheap for a good paintjob...well at least it is here.

Sounds like it will be a great project car when finished!!!

If I hadn't seen my friend's 911, I wouldn't consider a $2200 paint job. I paid just over $8,000 for painting and a bit of body work on my wife's 944. I'll post pics when it's back. El Gallo says 2 weeks. The 8k job took 9 months.

Angry Car is back from paint, pistons next week?

Sorry for the lousy pictures. I now have the sunroof seal, door, window and hatch seals back on. Still need to do the door handles, mirrors, hatch key seal.

Yes the windshield is broken I guess that what I get for a cheapo paintjob. Although they deny it; clearly the corner of the hood hit the glass. It is misadjusted. Grrr. I got him to take $400 off the price, it seems like it will cost $500 to replace the windshield with glass with the antenna or about $250 without an antenna.

Dave McGrath tells me that Mahle should have the rings for my pistons now. It was bad enough that the pistons took forever but then to not have the rings.

Hard to tell but it certainly looks very nice. I think clean bright White looks excellent on our cars. How are all the panel gaps? Assume they disassembled it to paint all the panels separately, but for $2200 who knows?

Waiting for parts is always a hassle. On small runs they always take the longest as they keep putting them to the back of the queue. These builds teach us patience if nothing else!

I took out all of the lights, took off the mirrors and the hatch for them. I also showed them how to remove the sunroof and front bumper. They removed the sunroof, nose panel, front bumper and hood. Doors were left on. The hood needs to be reset it is too far towards the windshield and not quite straight. I can't really complain for the price. They didn't take the diffuser off they just masked the rubber between the diffuser and the rear. They didn't mask or remove the trim pieces above the doors. Not sure what they are called. I am considering removing them and replacing the rubber, but I am afraid I'll break them. And it is a driver, never going to be a show car and in a few years maybe it will be my track car.

I was looking at www.magnagrafik.com he says he can do them for a 944. And it is just one piece for each panel either magnetic or vinyl.

I've had the martini stripes on the car now for about 3 years. If it's going to be a driver then I'd stay away from vinyl because it shrinks and discolors. Even if you get the high-end outdoor good for 8 years outside in AZ vinyl, it'll still shrink and discolor. For a track car, it doesn't matter and vinyl is a good idea. Sooner than later my car is going in for a paint job and she'll get some variation of martini stripes painted on.

Aaron,

Do you have any idea if the magnetic stripes would be more durable than vinyl? They cost about $75 more.

The car will likely be a driver for 3 more years until my eldest daughter goes to college. Then I'm hoping to have it see mostly track duty.

Thanks,

Richard

Doesn't Dave have a set of these for you that say 104.5 instead?

I can't wait. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to find time to start putting the shortblock together. Or at ogle all of it.
