re: PDK
We hired a company to take pictures of all our inventory for our site (4 dealerships worth). So one guy waves me over and said:
"so, is this a manual or what?" No, it's the PDK. Double clutch. "Can we call it an "Auto Stick?" No. It's a Double Clutch system. "Can we call it an Automatic?" No, it's a Double Clutch system. Not an automatic. "How do I drive then?" Just put it in "D" and drive it "What's (attempting to pronounce PDK) called?" It's called PDK. Porsche Double Clutch. Seeing a trend? (me smirking) "Yeah, I guess. Thanks!" No problem, that's why they pay me the big money. Ha. - Attempting to describe what a 'double clutch' is and how it operates to the non enthusiast is an exercise in PAIN! |

If you drive around in a Malibu and don't watch any racing, it is unlikely that paddle shifting or any type of computer controlled double clutch system would be in your world.

As far as I'm concerned, PDK is an automatic transmission. Sure, it works differently than "most" automatic transmissions and it has a much more functional manual mode than most autoboxes do, but at the end of the day if there's no clutch pedal and there's a notch for "D", I'm calling it an automatic.

Considering that within the next 10 years most luxury cars (let alone high line sports cars) will have the 'double clutch' system, people will have to get used to it.
but I chaulk it up to the like of 'bluetooth'; some people just don't get it. And it's not as easy to describe as one would imagine. But Jake I think you're onto something. I'll just point and say "Automatic. Sort of." |

tried it, yes it's faster but I still prefer the involvement of the manual. I know this has been debated to death.

I'm a 'hands on' type of guy. And it's STILL friggin painful to try and describe it. I'm actually finding myself say "YES, for the lOVE of GAWD it's an AUTOMATIC!!!!" Seriously. How do you describe what Pizza tastes like to a person who has no concept of sauce, dough or cheese? - You can't. You just gotta experience it. |
