Default Oil change

I just bought 1999 911 Porsche. How hard is it to change the oil in a 1999 911? And what type of oil are you guys running. And how many quarts does it take? Thanks Mike

Hi Mike and Welcome to the board.

The oil is easy to change. The filter can still be found at the local parts store. It is a cartridge. On ramps it is very easy to get too and could even be done on the ground. Just be careful to not pull the wrong plug. (dont pull tranny plug) the oil plug is in the middle of the oil pan and requires an allen wrench.

Porsche suggests mobile synthetic. Info on the weight can be found on the rear engine lid or owners manual page 124 and is dependant on your climate. The book says just under 9 qts.. Many also suggest you do it EVERY 3K miles. Becasue of the IMS issue. Porsche suggests a longer run time between changes but we are finding this to be too long.

I believe I used Mobil 1 0-40 last time I changed the oil. It really is at least as easy as any other car to change the oil on the 996.

I'm running Mobil 1 0W-40 in mine. I've been happy with it. When I change mine, I also fill up the filter before I put it back on. I usually end up using about 9-1/3 quarts, so I buy 10. I generally buy the filter and the "crush washer" for the drain plug from the dealer and I buy the oil at Autozone.

I don't jack my car - I just back it to the edge of the garage so that the engine hangs over the lip of the garage. This gives me just enough room to get under the car and do the job.

It's a very easy oil change, but there are a couple of things to watch out for:

1. It's very easy to strip the drain plug. Be careful removing it and putting it back in.
2. Porsche recommends changing the oil when the engine is hot. Therefore, I always wear gloves to make sure I don't get burned.
3. The oil comes out SHOCKINGLY fast when you remove the plug. I have a 15 quart drain pan, and I still have to put newspaper or something under it because I always spill a little.
4. It takes about 20 minutes for it all to drain out.
5. Porsche recommends changing the filter every other oil change. I don't do this - I change it every time.
6. Check the oil on the dipstick, not the electronic gauge on the instrument cluster.
7. In a colder climate like Pennsylvania, you might notice creamy, white gunk in the oil filler neck when you go to add oil. No need to worry, this is normal on the 996 when driven in cold climates or infrequently. Just carefully clean it out and don't worry about it. More frequent oil changes help to prevent this. It's caused my condensation forming in the oil filler neck - the water there mixes with residual oil and emulsifies into the gunk that you see under the cap.

You'll find it to be one of the easiest oil changes you've ever done.
