How light can we make a 951 (900kg ?)
A year ago I started to build a 951 for racing with my friend Hákan.
As Hakan is an aeronautical engineer he are usual of weight saving on he's projects. . The idea is to have a weight of 900 kg and 350cv to get that we are making an compleate carbon fiber bodywork. The fact is: The factory 951 weighs 1300kg and has 250cv which gives a result of 1300/250 = 5.2kg per hp With 900kg and 350 hp you has= 900/350 that make 2.5 kg for each cv that is half the original power / weight ............. That's an power increase of 50% and with important improvement of handling and braking. Here is a list of what is the weight of diferent items in an 951 ( In KG) Rear seat: 12 kg Carpets and privacy front: 21 kg Carpets and insulation Luggage: 23 kg Jacks & Accessories: 3 kg Interior stuff (roof, below the plate glove, glove box, visors, lights, trunk / hood, cable 5 Kg ...): Speakers (4): 1 kg Door panel: 1.7 kg Spare wheel and tools: 15 kg Light projector and a motor mechanism: 4 kg Heating + panel: 4 kg Air conditioning: 12 kg Rear window: 25 kg Windscreens: 12 kg Front hood: 24 kg Sunroof: 10 kg Front Bumper: 14 kg Bumper rear: 14 kg Rear deck: 14kg Front fenders: 2x 8kg Rear fenders: 2x 7kg Doors 2x Seats: 2x 25kg Dash board and instuments: 10kg Generator: 7.2kg Fuel tank: 10kg Thats make more than 335kg or 735lbs and we have cutted of much more. Ower 944 carbon fiber front fender weights 0.8kg (1.76lbs) Saludos Cordiales Jan K rsr-sport.com |

Jan, keep posting on this. It will be interesting to see what you finish with. I have looked at your website but couldn't see any 944 parts? Do you have a link? I am looking to do something similar. Obviously you can take out all the parts you mentioned above, but you have to put something in their place like hood, hatch, seats etc etc. It will be good to see just how light you can get yours down to.

In this moment we are making every thing in fiberglass to test all the moulds and fitting.
The only things that we have finished in carbon fiber is a hood (3.3kg) and a front fender (0.8kg). According to we finishing the pieces I publish it in the Web. As we have the work shop full of ours clients cars this one have to wait some time. An other problem is that my friend Hákan are working in the aircraft industry and dosen´t have to much time over. We CadCam designe every thing firts and calculate strength a weigth. Last edited by El Vikingo Tropical; 06-23-2009 at 02:50 PM. |

Sounds good Jan.
...er I am 100% sure you are writing way better than if I tried it in your language, but you might change 'udder' to 'other'. One means the part of a Cow that the Milk comes out of. |

Nice looking parts but wouldn't it have been adviseable to take the side impact strip off before you made the molds?

Carbon fiber 951
We left the strip since the curbatura reinforce the doors, as they are made in the minimum possible of material to reduso weight.

Are you looking at producing any widebody panels in carbon fibre?

This is great stuff. I'm hoping you will incorporate some nice aerodynamic features in the molds. Such as vents in the fenders etc.

Wide body
The rear fender are 45mm wider than the original and we are making them with air intake for the brakes.
The pic is from the first premould befor that the real mould is made. The original rear fender has to be eliminated. The new carbone fender has the wheel arch cut out 20mm in order to low the supension more. [IMG][/IMG] |

So how much of the original metal fender do you leave?
Nice progress. Keep it coming. |
