Default Parts haul!

Recently, a local Porsche hobbyist offered to sell his collection of 928 spares. He had done an interesting project of putting a Euro S engine with a 5L block into a 914. (search for "914 Alien" or "918" in interested) A real problem for him was that the driver's side (even) cam broke but the bolt for the sprocket held. This led to piston damage and, finally, needing a spare Euro S engine.

He's moving to a smaller place and moving on from needing 928 spares so I've got a fresh pick-up load of spares. Some stuff is useful like a pair of Bosch alternators. There's an '83+ Euro S block and pistons, too. (M28.22) What I'm most happy with is a pair of Euro S heads. Pictured below.

In one big blue tub, there were 3 pairs of cylinder heads. The problem with unknown heads is that the casting numbers aren't part numbers and only hint at what it is. Measuring the valves and intake port gives the facts. Standard US heads have 38mm exhaust valves and 43mm intakes. The "S" heads have 40mm exhaust and 45mm intake valves. The intake port is also bigger with 38mm on US heads and 40mm for a Euro S. (Or "RoW" if you'd like)

The casting numbers are:
928.104.346.1R (early US 4.7l 38/43mm)
928.104.356.1R (later US 4.7l 38/43mm)
928.104.348.3R (later Euro S 40/45mm)

Parts may be parts but some parts are more equal than others!

Thanks!

Gotta add some pictures. Here's the three heads, big valves in front, and showing the casting numbers.

The chambers on the heads all look alike. I'm not finding a pic of the early S heads on my 2 Euros but those have a different shape. These three are the same with different valves.

Th measurement of the intake port confirms these are "real" Euro heads. The two with smaller valves have a smaller intake port (38mm) than the Euro S heads (40mm).

Something interesting was that the carbon scale and fire ring on the two US heads was 97mm so off 4.7L blocks. The ring on the S head measure 100mm so it was used on a 5L block. My buddy has done some 5L blocks with heads like these but he didn't recall all of the combination and if these were on a hybrid engine.

Maybe someone knows but were big 2-valve heads used on 5L blocks at all? I'm going to dig around on that one.

Default Pistons and cranks

Sorting through things...

Two more crankshafts and a box of 95mm and US 97mm pistons. Some look good and some are scrap. Looks like 2 4.5L engines and 1 4.7L with a few missing. Didn't do a final count.

Tossed on top are two damaged Euro pistons. Those failures led to the lots of the parts. Not pictured are 8 loose early Euro S 97mm pistons and a late Euro S block w/pistons/ So... Near 40 pistons in the lot!

Default Euro S engine block

I was checking out the engine block today. It looked like it had been exposed to some water in a couple of holes and the crank was seized. I cleaned out some crud and applied penetrating oil to the piston rings. It took a while but it finally broke loose. There looks to be some light corrosion in a couple of holes but not too bad. No obvious pitting. No scratches at all. I'm hopeful it'll be useful if the need arises.

One surprise is that the pistons are the early, lower-compression version. The notches are bigger than they should be in an M28-22 engine. I understand there was some part number bleed-over to the later engines. A check of the PET with engine serial number confirms that the engine should have the bigger-notch pistons. The later engines are rated at 10.4:1 compression ratio with the earlier engines being 10:1. But... The engine is turning and the bores look good. That tells me the pistons are probably good, too.

Here's a pile of good parts and something I can't place.

The good stuff is a hodge-podge of parts from 2-3 engines. There's an early and a later (oil-filled) tensioner. Some idlers that move smoothly. A couple of tensioner arms. 2 dipsticks. A water bridge. A couple of oil fillers. A later oil pick-up. Basically a bunch of parts that I may never need. With the prices and availability issues some of the wear parts may come in handy. Going into the boxes.

And then there's this odd bracket I don't recognize. Is it the alternator bracket from a 1978 Pinto?

I don't recognize that bracket either. Definitely not a 928 alt bracket. Also, Jim Doerr may be interested in some of those parts. The oil can for instance is a good early CIS part if it is in good shape. Perfect for another restoration job.
