Yes it is. That was over ten years ago, when I tried to take Herbie for his first drive after I had done the brakes, suspension, timing belts, waterpump, fuel filter and any number of other things you would normally do, to a $1000 944 with 164,000 miles on the odometer, and few records.
Oh, I did find some receipts. One from the towing "service" that evidently dropped it in front of my co-worker's home - with all four corners creased where they attempted to place the car on their dolly.. As near as I can guesstimate - the lady that saw the Porsche posters on the wall of my cube figured me for a mark when she announced that she had a Porsche she wanted to sell. Naturally, being the inquisitive type, I asked; "what model"? She indicated that it was a 944 and that she would sell it to me for $1500. Well - this sounds like it could be a good deal. I indicate some interest and suggest that we arrange a time that would allow me to see the car. A few weeks pass and I had really not given it much thought... when one day she pops in and says she would sell the car to me for $1000. Ok - now you have my attention! I'm always looking for a deal on endless projects. So the gears are turning. I figure if this things starts, runs under its own power and isn't a bashed-up, rusted out, piece of crap --- I'll buy it. Well, it was pretty much at the low end of passable. But I figured the very fact that it did run, and wasn't particularly rusty - I could fix anything else. I did a lot of work to get Herbie dependable as a daily driver -- year-round. I beat the crap out of that car laying out RallyCross courses, competing in Road Rallies and RallyCrosses and took in a few autocrosses and track days. Herbie made it to 944Fest from 2005-2009. Ran on the track each year we were at Nelson Ledges and the time we invaded Mid-Ohio. Winslow and I won the first FestRally in 2006, in Herbie. I think Herbie was the best car I have ever owned. It was really good at so many things and not bad at anything. Here are a few more early shots...

Not so. Herbie will live again. Ride again?
We have all the stuff to make Young Herbie. We just need the time to get to it. First on the list is fixing Stu. I will do some cleaning of the engine bay in the next few days in preparation for the installation of the repaired head. Then I will have a much better idea what I have. Then there is the house and garage we plan to build on our new farm. That won't take up much of our time...
