Water temperature gauge vs. oil temperature gauge
It was verrrry cold a few nights ago - 4 above at most. I decided to get the 997 C4s up to temp so I took her out for a little ride. The oil temp started up after about 5 minutes but the water temp did not budge. Finally after 10 minutes, the water temp finally got to moving. Is this unusual? My previous experience is that the water temp rises faster than the oil temp.
I'm wondering with the cold block and all that the oil temp rose before the block got warm enough to transfer heat to the coolant. Make sense or am I in denial? |

That's very strange.
Usually the coolant temp rises to and stays at 175 then several minutes later the oil temp begins to rise from its 150 start on the gauge. I wonder if the coolant gauge or its sensor was frozen. BTW, love my C4S !!

Water Temp guage in the 997 is a glorified idiot light, it does not read real time water temps.

Dave if it doesnt read temp then what is it measuring? Its just not a thermocouple with sending unit.
But anyway I was running down (a closed course in the desert with professional driver DO NOT ATTEMPT) a road, doing about 90. Ambient temps were in the 105 area. Both gauges were in the 180 degree range. I was impressed (unless Dan can tell me that both gauges are worthless- I dont know how they work Dan) I have NEVER seen temps that low in heat like that. In the 997 or 996. I can say that in my 993TT I never saw a water gauge go over 100 degrees. |

Hey Paul, sorry for the delay (like 4 mos.) in reading this thread. I don't post hear that much. However, from my understanding its basically just a sending unit and will only go into the red once the car is over heating...did you ever notice that it gets to 175 so quickly. To be honest I am just relaying info I heard from the guys at GMG racing, I was shocked to hear this as I feel a car the caliber of the 997 doesn't have a real water temp guage.
