Might be the excuse I need to replace my current Mac mini server. I could use my old one in the media room.

The replacement Cellar Door arrived last night. After the Gold Rush still has an issue, but it at least doesn't skip on this one. I think it was pressed from a bad master. I don't know if I'll bother returning it again after all the crap they gave me last time.

It is a good album, especially side B.

Playing around with Roon again on another free trial. I haven't bought any dedicated hardware for it yet. I loaded Core on a HP mini that I use as my streaming server (Channels DVR, Plex). Tidal is my source music. I'm using my MBP as an App. Oppo 203 is Roon Ready but doesn't do multichannel. Marantz 30n is Roon Tested and connects via Airplay. Apple TV also connects via Airplay and supports multichannel. Playing familiar tracks on all the devices. Here's my take so far:

I don't care for Airplay. Lacks dimension. Even with multichannel going it just sounds dull. It's really noticeable when using Airplay through Apple TV. Airplay to the 30n is marginally better, but not by much. I can see how Airplay would be nice to pipe music through the whole house though.

Roon through the Oppo is better, but it's the same problem I have when I use Tidal natively on Apple TV - I don't care for the sound of the AK4458VN for music. I think I'll build a digital coax tomorrow and run the Oppo through the Marantz to see if I like it.

I still prefer the sound of Tidal through the Marantz using Heos, but I really dislike the GUI. The only one worse I've seen is the Tidal app on Apple TV. I really like the Roon interface.

Playing the Atmos tracks on Apple TV is interesting. It's kind of neat. Unfortunately the music they have isn't really anything I like. The AKM is well suited for this, but I guess that shouldn't be a surprise.

I made a digital coax using Belkin 1694A coax with Canare RCAPs to go between the Oppo 203 and Marantz 30n. You can tell it's digital because the boots are orange
Holy crap this is awesome! I did add Tidal to Plex, but was less than impressed. Roon really has no direct competition, at least not that I could find. Using existing hardware for a few months to see what I think of it. Monthly Roon subscription, old Tab S2 for control and leaving Core on the HP EliteDesk mini for now.

Speaking of reusing old hardware, I found my Shure e5c IEMs. Going to try them for a while, but I think I'm going with a pair of Sennheisers next time. Kind of hoping for a Black Friday deal on the HD800S. I just keep remembering how uncomfortable the Grados were, so I'm not terribly upset I can't find my old ones.

I should go do something productive. I've been in the media room listening to this setup for the last 9 hours. I'm unbelievably happy with it.

I've tried triple-flanges, foam and soft flex sleeves on the Shure IEMs and can't make them comfortable. Sennheiser is on sale now, so I took advantage.

Best is to try a cheapie from a line you’re looking at and if it fits go for a higher end model especially if you have problematic ears

I almost bought the Massdrop Sennheiser HD58X Jubilee, but ended up getting the HD820. They were the same price of the Grado GS3000e that I was going to buy. I made sure to buy them from an authorized dealer that has a 60-day return policy.

I'd love to have the WiFi Rose RS150B: https://eng.hifirose.com/rs150
But not at $5k. It has the direct Roon control that I want with an HDMI output for video. Does anyone else make anything similar? Not really concerned about a DAC.

Decided to give RoPieee a try. Ordered parts last night, but the RaspberryPi 4 is on backorder until next month. Also ordered a HiFiBerry DAC2 HD, but I probably should have ordered their DIGI2 pro instead. I may go ahead and put in an order for that today.

I was checking the Roon Core PC while streaming and noticed high CPU and memory utilization. Digging into it, it wasn't Roon at all. It was the PlayOn app. Roon was using very little resources in my setup, even when doing the initial MQA unfold. It didn't have any issues with PlayOn running, but the CPU was bouncing between 60-80% utilization. After turning off PlayOn, it was around 5%. I run Plex on that machine too. I should see what it does when I start streaming.

Basic Mac mini running headless has been faultless for me. Could probably get better sound w other or cheaper but Mac familiar so this is dead easy. Had to look up Playon as had never heard of it

PlayOn is the only reason there's a PC in this house. Little HP about the size of a Mac mini, running headless.

I don't know if you've run into this, but when running a Mac mini headless, the GPU shuts down and performance suffers. I've been running one of these since 2014: https://www.amazon.com/CompuLab-fit-.../dp/B00FLZXGJ6
I put a DisplayPort version on the HP. My apologies if you already were aware.

I've been holding off buying a new mini because I don't think Roon Core will run bare metal on Apple silicon yet.
