Default 3.1 951 project pictures

Hi guys,

Here is a little update on my 3.1 951 project. We'll be firing it up this week, so these pictures are a little dated. This car is a 968 from the motor to the six speed transmission. This includes the bellhousing so clutch jobs will be a few hours vs a day and a half. The 968 bellhousing also allows you to use 911 TT sport clutch parts and the factory flywheel trigger for the TEC.

Here are a few pictures I hope you enjoy.

The 8V head from the 2.7 NA car flows very well, especially when it's prepped properly. These heads will outflow most/any 951 turbo head. This motor will probably put down around 500whp using a hydrolic factory turbo cam with full boost by 3 to 3.5K. I've driven a few of the 16v cars, and they are great if you want a later onset tq car. I prefer the early tq and mid range feel of the 8V setup.

Duke was able to get decent low end out of his 16v 3.0, but he is around 11-1 compression. I'm sure he'll be fine, but that's alot of pressure for these old designed inline fours. Also, the 16v heads aren't nearly as strong as the 8V heads. Keep in mind that these heads aren't designed for huge air flow. You can outflow either of these heads with too much boost.

If we see 480 to 520 WHP using 91 fuel at 17-18psi, I'll achieve our goals. The goal of this motor is to have great low-mid range power with as little boost as possible. Last time with this motor we saw 530whp but at 23psi with race gas mixed with 91. I had some heating issues and other issues that we've addressed. I also didn't like the power curve of the old GTK650 turbo. This one by Precision is smaller, but was built with my goals in mind. The new Precision Billet wheel BB turbos are performing very well.

Here are pictures of the new vented hood and how we modified the bumper to allow better flow to the intercooler and dual front mounted oil coolers.

Beast..

I like the front bumper mod, i want to do the same on mine to better feed my FMIC but then i end up with the dilemma of where to put my front plate. With the way things are in my area, as soon as i turn the corner id probably get a ticket for not having one.

Very Nice!
The air inlet pipe looks huge, where is the air filter located?

It's a neat setup. We opened the intake up quite a bit and installed it in the fender. It's behind the black plastic covering. We made the fender water resistant by using a waterproof webbing material on the bottom. Our CFM calculations showed we needed this much air flow when using filters.

Holy crap George.. them sure are fancy!

Only real reason I asked about the head is the 16V heads, from my understanding, are MUCH less prone to detonation, allowing for higher static compression ratios to be run, and when running a full custom beast like this, everything is being changed anyway....

I will one day be building a 3+L engine for my 951, and plan to build it using the 16V head for just that reason, higher static CR, alows for optimaization of off boost performance, and over all lower boost to be used..

Not sharpshooting, was just currious!

Thanks for the info, and for the pics and inspiration!

Ha, that intake is funny. Good way to maximize the space I guess. But does that mean you need to remove the front nose to remove the intake? It looks like a one piece aluminum pipe.

Did I read that right? Stock 951 cam?

I think it's the only one of it's kind. Fits perfectly and I'll now have the intake out of the hot engine bay. The new intercooler won't have to work as hard. The cooler the air, the more power. Under hood temps when working our cars are F****** HOT. Open your hood after a good run. Do it at night and you'll see your headers and exhaust side of your turbo bright red.

This mod is worth doing for those running intake's within the engine bay. These modded cars suck air, lots of it. Look at the intakes of any factory car running over 300whp. They have huge intakes and none of them suck hot air. The factory 951 intake was in the wheelwell. This wasn't done as an afterthought.

This will help keep things as cool as possible. This little motor will be producing about 190hp per liter. Any cooling mod makes sense if you want it to last and be consistent with it's output.

Thanks for all the replies. This project has been a bitch, but the car will be a blast.

No, just remove the front driver wheel and remove the plastic. There is a connecter right at the fender under the hood. These filters don't need to be cleaned very often. They actually filter better when dirty, which is why we are using a few to allow sufficient CFM.
