The body is more or less finished in fiberglass we does it so first because it`s cheaper that way make changes if we doesn't like something or it's doesn't fit wright.

Default Eliminate the torsion tube????????

As I am making a very light 951 racer I'm looking to reduce weight and as the car has a mix of original chassis, tube frame & rollcage it`s very straight.
Why not just removed the torque tube and leave the axle with a help bearing in the centre?
If the engine and gearbox have new solid and reinforced mounts they doesn't twist.....or do they?

I`m just was wondering if some one had tried to do it before and how. It `s save about 25lb (11kg) and as we are cutting and taking away everything possible without wrecking our.
We have considered CF. it's expensive and gives a lot of work to do but the truth is that we are addicted to it.
The idea is not to eliminate the complete piece, we would cute the centre part of the tube letting the clutch house and the rear gear box mount.
And as we are making the car lower we have to rise the gearbox and change the gearbox support for a new one and we also are taking away the torsionbars and tube changing it for coil-overs and home made suspension arm support.
The question is how far to go?
Maybe we should draw a line where to stop and finish the car!

If you are moving the gearbox, I would keep the torque tube... it serves not only to support the drive shaft, but also to align the engine and trans-axle. that 25lbs could keep you from trashing the driveshaft!

There are improved bearing carriers I would suggest you get as soon as they become available... you COULD make the tube from carbon fiber, but..it would require major fab to siamese tube ends onto the CF tube... would be better to stick with the steel tube, and experiment with CF once the rest of the car if figured out...

Nice progress! It is indeed a one off look. Tell me, how much do you think the sound insulation really weighs? I've heard many different amounts and some people say don't even bother...

Looks good.

Patrick, I can't remember but I think the insulation was about 45lbs off my car. I think Chris burnt his whole car in an oven and lost 60lbs. I'll ask him again.

Looks like the headlights are just a blank panel, no? I like the splitter and side dooverwhackies (can't think of what they're called?). Sort of has a bit of Contemporary 997 front with a bit of Ferrari thrown in. Looking good.

Thanks Dave, I thought it was about that. Seeing as I don't have a giant oven, it would be by hand and I'm wondering if it's worth the reported effort, but 45-60lbs sounds worth it...drat...

Does this mean you are getting into another car?????

Propane it to a crisp, and use a shop vac after that... just watch out for wiring and fuel lines...

Or go to wallmart and get a can of "Aircraft stripper" but.. You WILL have to repaint after you finish... and don't get any of the acft stripper on the outside paint, it WILL lift the paint off down to the metal...

Or a heat gun and a good sharp scraper

Yeah I've heard of those methods in addition to the "Don't bother it's really not that heavy". CP, does the dry ice one really work?

John, I'm contemplating at this stage. It may be nothing more than continuing to dream for dreaming's sake. I need to feel like I am not yet finished. I have 2 piles. One of them is a pile of cars and parts. The other is a pile of crap that I don't even know if it's finished being assembled. No pun intended, but the 2nd pile will dictate what happens to the first pile.
Don't you just hate piles...

Default Gearbox soport

One problem of making the car lower is that the mainshafts loose the angle and break down.
I have made a new gearbox support (-1.5kg) this brings the whole gear box up 60mm and this way the car recover the angle between the gear box and the wheels.
The gear shift axle is now running over the transmission tunnel instead of in the interior as std one.
By the way I modified the making a home made short shift.

No I wont keep the original front lamps! Its a race car = no lamps.
The thing is that I`m making two cars!! One for race and one for the street clone with the same look and colors

I didn't know that one.
I don't know how much weight I have removed taking away all that sound insulation from the car but I have one thing sure! I hate it that shit. I have burned, scrabbled cutted hands after that experience.
