Default Got my new wheels today! Woo Hoo!

My thanks to Ed Hughes for seeing fit to put new wheels on Ruby, for the pretty fair deal he cut me on them, and for his patience in dealing with my "so how are we doing on getting those Jeff Alton wheels, Ed?" emails over the past 14 months. I've wanted a set of gold-centered BBS RS wheels pretty much since I bought my black '84 911 Cab coming up on 5 years ago, and it's finally coming together.

Well, they arrived today! I haven't opened all of the boxes yet but the 1st one to come out was just like breathing for the 1st time.

16x8 / 16x9 3-piece'ers. I've got new Dow Corning 832 silicone rubber adhesive sealant ready for the re-seal, the Mother's Polishing Ball for the outer hoops, and I'm going to try to get the tires ordered today. FYI, BBS wants $75 per wheel to re-seal, plus shipping each way. I'm not even sure if that includes new hardware or not. Plan is to NOT send them out, because if I did that I'd want to do a full resto on them & that's just not in the budget. So, home reseal, coming up!

Fred, I love those wheels and was surprised when Ed decided to sell them, figured he'd keep them around for the hell of it. Ruby doesn't look the same w/o them, but those new Fuchs look great.

You need to share some pic when you get them on the car, I know they will look great.

Should be by next weekend Sean. Tires are supposed to be here Wed, and if I'm able to get the wheels resealed tomorrow, I'll be ready when they show up (48 hours recommended before mounting / inflating).

Pictures will be my 2nd priority, after ensuring no rubbing.

I still would love to see my 968 5-spokes done in black, with the outer trim ring in burgundy to match the black over burgundy of the 911 itself. But, I know realistically, I'm going to sell the old wheels & tires. I just have to figure out how much. The front tires are in good shape tread-wise, but after only a year the Kumho MX's are > 1/2 worn I think in the back. Still grippy, just not standing water friendly anymore.

Has anyone seen the 968 5-spokes for sale somewhere where I can see going rates for them?

Hey Fred, those will look great on your car. One thought for you regarding the Power Ball. If they have the same finish as my RS-GT's that you saw on my 993 a couple of weeks ago at TOD, they will get fine hairline scratches pretty easy. Use 3M Hand Glaze with fresh microfiber towels and they will look spectacular.

Ok, so I started the resealing process tonight...

Per Jeff Alton, I got some Dow Corning #832 Silicone Rubber Adhesive / Sealant (4 tubes, probably overkill, ~$9 / tube). I wanted to make sure I had enough.

I needed 12-point sockets, and most of my Metrics are all 6-points. In my case, I needed a 10mm & an 8 mm for the bolts.

I used an air gun to break the nuts free on the backside. I did do a few by hand first to see what kind of effort it was going to take - manageable by hand but awkward with the 9" wide wheels & extensions on the ratchets to clear the lips.

After removing the hardware, I applied only a minimal amount of pressure to the lips of the halves to gauge how stuck on there they were going to be... of course, this was before marking the halves... pop! Barely any effort & they popped apart (front from center face; center face to rear was on there a little better). Mark First, THEN disassemble.

The center needed only MINOR tapping on the backside of the hub-mounting area with a RUBBER mallet to pop it loose. Gentle taps, opposing edges in a circular motion. Off she comes. Be ready to catch the center so you don't lose it / damage it from falling on the bench.

I'll post up more after I get these cleaned up. I'm going to check with the chemical room at work & see if the large ultrasonic will affect the paint, or just do the bolts, etc.

BBS said they will not sell the hardware only, FWIW.

Ok, so I cleaned up the pieces of the 1st wheel tonight. Sorry for the delay in getting back to these, it's been hectic. While the tires are coming in tomorrow, my soft top's getting replaced on Tuesday / Wednesday next week, so I might not push to get these done before this weekend & just do one a night.

The back half had tons of remnants of former tape weights, and one current string of 2 oz taped over still on there.

I used a razor blade & simple green to get the majority of the prior sealant off, then used a softer blue scotch-brite pad on an air tool (pressure turned way down).

I used a Mother's polishing ball (small) lightly on the front half's face.

Getting the Mother's compound off, the simple green, the Berryman's B12 Chemtool (used to strip the adhesive from the old tape weights) off meant hitting the showers & using the ShowerMassage to get the compound out of the bolt holes on the front half.

What a difference they make... note the (3) at the bottom of the pic are the originals for comparison.

Long night.

I got the (2) 9x16's split, cleaned up, lightly polished like the 8x16's.

So I decided to start sealing them up. Did the 1st 9x16 tonight... wow is this a time-consuming process. I am taking my time since I haven't done these before.

Already separated, cleaned & ready for re-assembly...

1) chase the nuts' threads.
2) discover I only have (1) unopened tube of blue loctite. Whoops.
3) opened up the Dow 832 sealant.
4) lay a small bead all around the outside rim between the bolt holes & the fillet of the rim half (inner / back in this case).
5) place the center section on the back half & align holes
6) lay another bead around the outer / front half, like the 1st bead
7) place the front half on the center section
8) populate the (34) new bolts
9) loctite the nuts & hand-spin tight
10) snug w/ sockets
11) torque in an opposing / star pattern (what a freakin' PITA that is, trying to remember where you've been... I wiped the end of the bolt of blue loctite when it was done
12) re-check ALL the bolts... I somehow missed 2 the 1st time around (?!?!).
13) let cure

So, I have a whole ONE done by 10pm tonight. Ugh!!
