hello all..no start problem with a "new" purchase
picked up an 86 that had been non driven for several years. Over that time it was occasionally started and run until one time that it didn't start and they left it alone.
I owned an 81 a few years back and have been wanting to get back into another, found this one and decided I'll give it a shot. Done up to this point: T belt checked ( owner had it replaced 6 months before storage) Oil and filter changed Antifreeze changed fuel drained and filter changed air filter replaced cap rotor and wires inspected starter overhauled The issue I'm having is it cranks, but won't start. Have spark, fuel pump runs and pumps( although I don't know the pressure). Further checking netted me this: Air flow sensor installed backwards ( arrow pointing to air filter instead of throttle plate) broken plug at front top of motor behind circular port of some kind. alarm goes off unless extra key is in door lock and turned to unlock position. Any ideas appreciated. |

The broken plug is a short 8 inch or so extension that is connected to the throttle position switch mounted to the throttle body under the "T".
Need to make sure you have spark coming from both rotors, and that your fuel pump is actually running. The few times I've run into a no start turned out to be the crank sensor at the back of the engine, and the other it turned out to be the LH relay died. Relay was the easiest to deal with as I had a spare that I used in the fuel pump relay, then ignition, then LH. The horn relay is the same as all of those so can test them by putting them in the horn slot to see if they work or by using the horn relay in each of those till you've eliminated each as the culprit.

For the alarm try using the longest key you have to "unlock" each door and the hatch, as all of them will set the alarm.

Shane, thanks for the info, I didn't know that about the key and locks. I need to check spark on the other bank , only checked one side. The relay tip is good to know also.

Sounds like electrics to me.
When you crank it can you here the injectors firing evenly? It'd try a little starting fluid to see if it fires up. You say it has spark, so it should. At least check that one off in pen. Do you have the manuals? The site I used that had them is down. You can get a decent pdf, with wiring diagrams, through bittorrent. Then start digging through it. I'd look at the wiring from the EZK box to the injectors. Here's a fuse/relay chart to start: https://www.928gt.com/t-8586fuse.aspx

ok..so I checked the fuel pump pressure and it didn't even make 1 bar...originally I had just let it flow out when I changed the filter and jumped the relay and wasn't sure of the pressure....
new fuel pump on the way.. |

Also look at the in tank fuel pump (I think yours has it) there is a hose that degrades and clogs the external pump. Most just remove the internal pump.
