Update: the loaded torsion bar carrier, with stock bars and elephant racing bushings is IN THE CAR. YAY!
Problem: the passenger side end plate isn't sitting correctly. If you look at the pix, the mounting bolt is through the end plate and chassis, but the other end seems to have a lotta slop. Is that OK? I tried jacking the spring plate up a little, but the bushing doesn't really allow much rotation. Unless the zen masters have a better idea, I plan to continue reassembly, and eventually get the car sitting on its haunches for a while and see what happens. I'd prefer to have the pieces all fit together before I go for an alignment and find out it won't align (again). Update: to get it all in the right position I had to loosen all the bolts, and jack up the spring plates on both sides. Then everything rotated into the proper position and I could tighten everything down. I sorta knew that from other cars where you can't tighten the bushings until they're in the loaded position.

Doug, I tried loosening everything and jacking various things up, but I could never get my driver's side to look like that. It looks like your before pictures. I'll take another crack at it this winter, I guess. Do your spring plates move freely? One of mine binds a little, which is the other reason I think I'll be pulling them apart again.

Charlie,
The whole assembly seemed to be rotating around the big rubber bushing in the end plate where its in the chassis. I still have the original rubber in there. That bolt needs to be loose too. I jacked up the end of the spring plate to get it to rotate, and the car actually lifted off the stand a bit. To me that says that its only in position when its under load, which is what I've come to expect from car suspensions in general, at least the ones with rubber bushings anywhere. Actually, with just the spring plate and torsion bars, there's a little slop in the elephant bearing. With the swing arm (and spherical in the swingarm), its pretty tight. I don't have it all bolted down, as I discovered I hadn't sourced the odd length M-10s the attach the spring plate to the swingarm. Hope to find something at Spaenaur today. I'm around this weekend if you wanna come wiggle something.
