Looking good! Not sure I would use the stop smoke as assembly lube. I would just use engine oil and hand crank it enough to get the oil pressurized just before installation.

Looking good!

Did you see any debris coming out of the oil cooler at all when you flushed it? The cooler is the first part the oil hits after the oil filter. The cooler is full of small convoluted channels inside, it may trap some debris *IF* the filter bypass valve was tripped and let in larger debris. I think it's a wise decision to use a new cooler.

Never flushed it. Instead just bought a new one.

Project is on hold until I finish a project on a 928 in a few weeks. Then back to assembly and deciding what to replace the failing hybrid IMS bearing. I'll post pictures of it a little later.

Hey Imre,

If you need access to an unltrasonic cleaner, I have one at my shop. It holds about 10 ltrs of fluid and can clean pistons, etc. Can't put in a whole head, but if you want, I can send you some photos of the unit. It has a heater and timer for your stuff.

Thanks Livio! I'm mainly looking for one that would fit the engine block halves in them. But I might come and see you to clean the other small stuff that bolts to the block.

Finally some pics to update my restarted project.

First took the table cloth off the bench to see what shape everything was in. All looked normal. Then took a group photo of the damaged main bearings. The one on the left is a normal looking one. Then pulled the old rings to find a ton of carbon build up under them. The oil ring retainers looked caked too. i'm glad that I decided to install the new rings and not to leave the old one in place.

Since the carbon build up has been soaking in oil for the last 3+ years, it came off fairly easily using the back of a utility knife blade, a small screw driver and a bamboo squire. The white rag is what came off one piston. Then I cleaned it all up with the cleaners I got from Dollar Tree. It worked great, has high ammonia content so it will clear your sinuses. The results were pretty good. Then since I've set up the work area in the house and in the furnace room, I wanted to keep the smell down so instead of using engine oil I used Canola oil to keep parts moist. The last picture is of the work table, finally found a good spot for the Porsche sign I got from a buddy a few years ago.

The new rings had IKEA type instructions that were pretty straight forward. used the ring removal/installation tool to put them on the pistons. This was a pretty enjoyable part of the project. All the pistons are now ready to go onto the crank shaft and then into the block.

The following day I've dragged in the crank shaft assembly. Forgot how heavy this thing was. Then by chance, a buddy of mine had a '98 Boxter engine sitting in his garage waiting to be taken apart to sell it for pieces. I've offered him to do this so I can refresh my memory on how my engine needs to go back together. This worked out awesome! It all came apart in 3 evening and my son helped us doing as much of the work as possible. We used a medical patient lift to lift out the crank assembly from the Boxter block.

Here is a comparison of the Boxter and my 996 block (my engine pick was from 5 years ago when I first fixed it). The difference seems to be the bore size and the cylinder casting. Other than that it appears to be the same. The pistons are a lot smaller than the 996. Roughly about by 10mm.

Measured the intermediate shaft for straightness. It's good. Measuring the outside of the shaft is not ideal but it confirmed with some careful measuring that the tube is not bent. Swapped out the dual hybrid that I've sourced and failed with an LN hybrid dual row kit. Since the shaft was out, I used a big drill press to manually press in the new bearing using the parts from the LN bearing tool kit. It went in line butter. The shaft tensioner pad was worn so after ordering a new one at the local dealer (cheaper than online), it was re installed.
