My favorite repair of all time.

The factory manual seems to skip this part, and the how tos suggest taking all the bolts out.

So do the splined drive shafts just get pried out of the diff, or am I missing something?

The splined CV flanges in the transaxle are part of the transaxle... and are held into the defferential with a bolt in the center of them!

All the bolts need to come out to remove the CVs, then the bolt in the center of the flange, only then can the flanges be removed!

OK, I get it. I guess that's why it popped out on the BMW and never on the Porsche. It ain't broke so I'll leave it be. They were kinda in the way when I was wrestling the swingarms into the torsion bar carrier without the torsion bars, so I know its gonna be bear to repeat with the torsion bars in there. Oh well, at least its freezing in the garage so my hands will be numb.

doug

Doug, firstly congrats on the great work you've been doing.

Do you have a link or name of the conversion kit you speak of?

It's not the difference between T/bars or coilovers that is going to cause your car to be loose in the rear. They're all just springs after all.

Thanks. Here are the racer's edge bolts.

At this point I have the stock t-bars and helper springs, and while getting two springs all lined up can be tricky, I ran this way for 10 years before I wrecked, so I guess I'll put it all back with the new bushings. Unless someone offers me bigger bars for cheap.

Doug,

There is a thread here.

I claim to have an actual turbo cup setup. From my notes of 6/95:

Front shock Bilstein# AK1120/AK1121, 951-343-525-32. Valving 600/190 kilo pascals
Rear shock Bilstein AK 37354 951-333-032-33. Valving 561/218 kilo pascals

Front Spring Progressive 951-432-131 (This may be wrong), wire diameter is 8.6-14.4mm. 250-450 (or 480?) pounds
Rear Spring Progressive (blue dot, but I can't see it now, with primer everywhere), wire diameter is 8.16-10.6 mm. 80-180 pounds.

Actually the one set of numbers I may be off on is the spring rates, as I got the spring numbers from a different vendor than I ended buying from.

The progressive springs and shock numbers do indicate Cup parts though.

The Cup parts list I have lists the springs as:

Front 951.343.531.32
Rear 951.333.531.32

doug

Update: I dragged the torsion bar carrier into the basement to reinstall and index the torsion bars. I used the Aluminum spacer on one of the cover plate bolts as a guide. When I took the cover plates off, the spring plate just touched the spacer with the swingarms removed, and the spring plates fully lowered.

In the pix here, you can see the spring plates are centered (inside pix) and there is a small, but approximately equal gap side-to-side between the springplate and the spacer.

The advantage of doing this standing up is the ease with I could re-index the bars to get the spacing set correctly, and identically side-to-side. Many repetitions were required on each side, since which ever spline I was trying to re-index came out last.

doug

Update: Is there more than one torsion bar carrier part number? I'm (finally) assembling the damn thing and it appears to be too short! I measure 41.5" from bolt flange to bolt flange.

With the torsion bars in there the spring plates don't go all the way on!

Are you forgetting the bottom 1/2" aluminum spacers on one of the four bolts on each side that connect the aluminum piece to the torsion tube?

Also, sadly, the new UCR site has broken your image links.

I haven't gotten as far as the cover plates. The spring plates don't go all the way in with the torsion bars in place. They're about an inch too far out.

As for the links, the overall link in my sig is updated, but I have no idea how to fix all the old links.

Update: The parts catalog has two numbers, pre and post 86:

A 944 331 045 00 rear-axle cross tube -86
944 331 045 02 rear-axle cross tube

I wonder what changed? Its too soon for an ABS related change.

update: Mr. mallet solved the problem. The torsion bars weren't seated completely. YAY!

I love problems that can be solved with a mallet!

The ones you can't solve that way are clearly electrical

Ever see a race car stuck in the pits because the starter motor won't engage? They try and solve that (mostly) electrical problem with a mallet.
