Odo (e) to the cracked dash...
Hi All:
I have a 1989 944S2. The odometer has stopped working, and as I have to remove the gauge cluster, I thought I read in the Forum some years ago that the gauge cluster can be removed without removing the steering wheel, although it is somewhat dificult. True? Then there is the subject of the cracked dash. I have a dash from a 968. Is this a 1. Direct drop in 2. Semi-Direct drop in with some bracket modifications 3. A waste of time and money The big thing that scares me is the air bag. I know about diconnecting the battery for at least one half hour, etc, but then there's the procedure of re-installing the air bags and reconnecting the battery. I have the instructions from Clark's Garage. When it comes to reinstalling the air bags, you have to use the Bosch Hammer to reset the brain. But, one of the garages that I use says that the air bag system on this car is a dumb system, in that it just checks to see that an air bag is present, so there is nothing to reset. Any comments? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. Regards, Bill |

Excellent question. From what I've seen the 968/51/44 dash appears identical.

Yes the cluster can be removed without removing the steering wheel... it just takes patience, I have this procedure down to about 10 minutes..
Dash SHOULD be a direct swap... YMMV Airbags IIRC are a dumb system, shouldn't need reset as long as everything is reconnected before the battery is hooked back up.. again YMMV... |
