Default Removing stone guards

Any suggestions on removing the discolored stone guards without messing up the paint ? Heat gun on low ?

Heat gun is what I have heard. I was going to remove the guards on my '90 cabriolet but was concerned with color being different underneath guard from rest of paint, so I did not. The heat gun will soften paint up so go slow and use care.

Rubber wheel from a body shop supply might be better than a heat gun... the heat gun will soften the paint as well!

Yep, the eraser wheel heats the metal and rolls the crusty old guards up in little boogers. Less than a few minutes for the small guards, 10-15 on the big ones.

I also like the one made by 3M. Not a fan of the Astro Pneumatic version. If you don't want to order one, you should be able to get one at your local automotive paint supply. I'm sure others will chime in with what brand worked well for them.

But for the record, I didn't use it for the stone guards. Those were removed by the body shop when I had the car repainted the wrong color.

My eraser wheel arrived today(thanks again Curt. I purchased it through your link).

Are all the stone guards created equal ? Should I go for evilbay cheap or splash out on OEM ? or is there a cheap but still good quality item you guys can suggest ?

cheers

I have a range of materials selected for side by side testing once either car gets resprayed...

As of right now it is looking like the red car will see paint first, but there is a long row to hoe to get to that point.. so I wont have any suggestions for a while, but once I do I am sure I will end at the cheapest, most effective solution!

Personally, I don't like the stone guards. I don't have them on my car and have no intention of ever installing a set. They're pointless IMO.

But, if I was interested in something like that, I'd probably go with either OE or a 3M material. There's always the option of making them yourself too. I suggested to someone a while ago about making them out of magnetic material so they could be removed and cleaned. Never heard if he made them or not.

Here's the AutCAD file for the guards: http://grabcad.com/library/porsche-944-stone-guards

I believe he bought the materials, but hasn't gotten a chance to try them out in a real world scenario yet... but I could be wrong...

I think I will just remove the cruddy ones on there and see how the paint endures without any stone guards in place for a while. I can always put them on if they start to get marked

I got the stone guard behind the front wheel removed but the drivers side rear has been painted over and passenger side is missing. I am reluctant to touch drivers side for obvious reasons, so I think I will add one back to passenger side for uniformity even though I think I prefer having none. I will leave front without them though
Peace
