Default Nav replacement

I disconnected the battery on my 2001 740i sometime ago and fried the the nav computer. I picked up a good used computer and I'm preparing to install it. Does anyone have any real world experience with nav replacement? I'd really like to not screw this one up as well. It appears from the post on e38.org that programming is required to replace. Is this required on a used replacement or just a factory new? Should the system discs be with the nav package that came with the car or is this going to be a dealer thing? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
David
