18" wheels
Should I?
Well I have but like Marc, I wanted to have my first thread here.......roll on :icon107: |
we need to get some more people to come on over!

Spread the word gently, and I guess if IB forums annoy us all too much, we'll just migrate over.

Tire clearance can be an issue but as long as reasonable tire choices are made it can work. I do have to say that to my eye, 8 & 9 x17 Cup1s look perfect on 964s |

Wasn't there a steering rack support that could be used on the 964 if using 18" wheels? |

That support is a new one on me. Does it really make a difference with 18" wheels?

Adrian had 18's on his C4. Then went to 19's. Thanks for allowing me my first post. ____________ Noah 93 RSA |
If you are going to track it here you won't pass safety exam with 18s unless you have an aftermarket suspension.

Adrian never put 18 inch wheels on his C4 when he owned it. He went from 17 inch to 19 inch. However, its new owner did a few laps of the Nürburgring and broke the rear suspension (KONI). |

19's were/are Sportec. But perhaps a search is better than my memory. |

The original 964 design provided good grip or traction using lightweight 16 inch D90 wheels, but what you have to remember that it's not the wheel diameter in itself that's the problem, it's the wheel width and wider lower profile tyres which comes with the greater diameter; and additional weight. Wider lower profile tyres provide a larger contact patch and hence an improvement in grip, but greater resistance to changing direction. The more resistance to a change of wheel direction the greater the stress placed upon every component in the 964's wheel carrying and suspension system. Every 964 is between 15 and 20 years old and fitting wider wheels and tyres places additional stress on already worn components. It's not just the major assemblies either, its every nut, bolt, bushing, support, mount, clamp etc etc. Keep in mind also that just replacing struts and shocks still leaves many other components to fail under the additional stress. |
