History Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, I was driving an '86 951 that I had purchased from Don Istook. It performed wonderfully, but was a little rough cosmetically (typical racers car! lol). A friend of mine wanted to buy it, and when a "too cheap to pass up" 951 came up for sale in California, I let him buy it from me and purchased the replacement. Unfortunately, I made arrangements to have the car shipped by a company that misrepresented their services. Three weeks after the car was supposed to be picked up, I got a call from the seller, saying "good news/bad news"... The good news was that they had indeed picked it up, the bad news was that they had apparently tried to recreate the opening scene of the TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard" while loading it and had done substantial damage to the car in the process. I won't go into all the details except to say that State Farm took good care of me on the deal and a friend, upon hearing the story, nicknamed the car the "Gen'l Lee".

Once I had the car in my possession (another long story), I started working through the damage to see what could be salvaged and eventually came to the realization that the car would always carry the stigma of a "rebuilt" car, even if I did everything right, and that I would be money ahead by parting it and getting another car that didn't require all the work. I assumed that I could take all the good parts, along with the dixie flag sunroof insert that I painted up, and pass it on to the successor, keeping the Gen'l Lee name alive.

The car I wound up finding was a "union blue" car from Maryland, a decidedly "yankee" state, and it would have been wrong to call it the Gen'l Lee. At the same time I was negotiating for the car, it was brought to my attention that a friend of mine from Altanta had been talking about buying it for a while, and while he was serious about it, he hadn't pulled the trigger yet as he was out of the country for a couple of week. In honor of burning my friend in Atlanta (and no worries, we still laugh about this as he had done the same thing to me previously), the car is named after the Union General, William Tecumseh Sherman, who burned down Atlanta in the Civil War.
