I hate GPA requirements....

Posted 09-23-2008 at 11:54 PM by wombat7
So, this is my first blog... EVER, but after my day today I just need to vent a little.

I graduated with my BS in Computer Engineering this past February. My pursuit of this degree was not without much struggle and drama. Due to this drama, my GPA was not very good. In fact it was very far from stellar, but still good enough to get my degree.

For the last 3 years, I have been working in motorsports, an industry driven by job performance not GPA or academics. All they care about is that you have a desire to do well, are willing to make the sacrifices that are required, and can do prove that you can help the team. It doesn't matter if you graduated with a 4.0 or didn't graduate at all...

About 2 months ago I started looking for work outside of racing due to this year's grueling IRL schedule, the fact that my passion to work in profession motorsports is not what it was when I began, and the fact that my life has changed a lot since I started. My job search has been very up and down. I have been contacted for multiple job opportunities but all to often those conversations end with 'well you seem very qualified, but we can't hire anyone with a GPA lower than X.' I personally feel that is complete bullshit. If you are qualified for a job, you should be hired for the job... PERIOD. Just because someone did not perform up to some arbitrary standard based on an arbitrary scale doesn't mean they are less capable to do a job than someone who meets the standard. I understand that there is a need for standards in corporate America, but those standards should be flexible based upon the candidate. I am tired of having to explain myself over and over again. Unfortunately I did not perform up to my potential when I was in college. Deal with it... Stop judging me and give me a chance to show you what I can do!

Most people I knew in HS and College who had the highest GPAs and were Merit Finalists and Cum Laudes and all of that stuff were the dumbest group of people I never laid eyes on. Book smart to a fault, but in the real world they were almost adolescent in education. They could fly through calculus and trig problems, but had no idea how to make an international phone call to china. They could recite every passage in the Magna Carta but had no idea how to apply for an absentee ballot. They could do those "drive 55 miles in 20 minutes" problems but had no clue how to change a flat tire.

My GPA in college was 2.6. But I worked full time while going to school. Had I not done that college would have been the easiest four years of my life. Wow. Go to class 3hrs a day. Thats difficult!

Whenever I interview people and ask them what theyve done, I immediately interrupt them when they tell me what their GPA was or what brand name school they went to. A dear friend of mine just finished up her Phd work at Columbia and she has no idea SMTP is or what the numbers on the sidewall of a tire mean.
